CeMAP changed in 2025: the five new units

Since 30 September 2025 CeMAP has five shorter units instead of three long papers: FRE1, FRE2, MRT1, MRT2 and a final case-study unit. Every exam is now sat online from home, whenever you're ready, and passes in the old units carried over automatically.

From Walbrook's page on the changes, the CeMAP specification (version 14, July 2026) and the FSRE specification. Checked 6 November 2026.

The five units

UnitExamPass
FRE1Industry, Regulation and Key Parties1 hour: 25 questions, then 3 case studies × 5 linked questions28 of 40
FRE2Skills, Principles and Ethical Behaviours1 hour: 25 questions, then 3 case studies × 5 linked questions28 of 40
MRT1Mortgage Law, Practice and Application1 hour: 50 questions35 of 50
MRT2Mortgage Products and Post Completion1 hour: 40 questions28 of 40
ASEW or ASSCAssessment of Mortgage Advice Knowledge2 hours: 6 case studies × 10 linked questions42 of 60

Every unit is passed at 70%, with a merit at 80% and a distinction at 90%. FRE1 and FRE2 together also make up Walbrook's separate FSRE qualification, which is shared with its financial advice diploma. The case-study unit has an England and Wales version (ASEW) and a Scotland version (ASSC), which differ on house buying.

Questions

When did CeMAP change?
Registration for the new five-unit CeMAP opened on 30 September 2025, and the new exams opened on Brightspace on 10 November 2025. The last old-format exams were sat on 12 January 2026, and everyone still on the old version moved to the new one on 13 January 2026.
What are the new CeMAP units?
FRE1 Industry, Regulation and Key Parties; FRE2 Skills, Principles and Ethical Behaviours; MRT1 Mortgage Law, Practice and Application; MRT2 Mortgage Products and Post Completion; and the final case-study unit, Assessment of Mortgage Advice Knowledge, in an England and Wales version (ASEW) or a Scotland version (ASSC).
I passed CeMAP 1 under the old format. Do I need to sit FRE1?
No. A pass in the old CeMAP 1 (UKFR) counts as both FRE1 and FRE2, and Walbrook moved it over automatically.
Do I have to sit the CeMAP units in order?
No. Walbrook suggests FRE1, MRT1, FRE2, MRT2 and then the case-study unit last, because it draws on everything else, but you can take them in the order you choose.
How much does CeMAP cost now?
Walbrook lists £735 for the full qualification, including study materials and the first attempt at each exam. Resits are £120 a unit. Check its CeMAP page for the current price before you register.
